Customer's Reviews (All-Reviews)

MJB ( Cali )
I purchased the MSI U210 notebook in white on 12/13/2009. I considered purchasing the MSI L2100, which has the exact same hardware, but comes with Windows 7 pre-installed instead of Windows Vista. The L2100 is only available in black however, and after checking it out at the local Fry's I decided to order the white U210 from Amazon and upgrade it to Windows 7 later with the free upgrade program.

This is my first netbook size computer, and so far I have been extremely happy with the U210. It has become my main computer out of three including an older full-size Dell laptop and desktop.

Some pros/cons:

Performance - I was surprised how fast this computer is. For web browsing, using MS office, and watching downloaded .avi files it performs extremely well. As others have mentioned however, while streaming videos from YouTube and Hulu are very smooth when viewed in a window, there is a lot of stuttering in full-screen. I have ordered the Broadcom HD decoder card (~$20 from Ebay) that others have mentioned and will update this review when I have a chance to install and test it out. The WiFi range is excellent. I also think the sound quality is more than acceptable from a computer this size. The screen is beautiful and the webcam performs well. Another pro is that the computer stays pretty cool and is not uncomfortable when used on your lap. The computer also runs Vista very well, and as my first experience with this OS, I have had no problems.
UPDATE: I bought and installed the Broadcom HD decoder card in 5 minutes. It goes into the empty mini PCI slot. It seems to -have improved YouTube HD and the HDMI output is now very smooth (I never tested HDMI before the decoder card), however, I still cannot watch Hulu in high-res (480p) at full-screen without significant stuttering.

No Bluetooth - My U210 did not come with an internal Bluetooth antenna, even though it has a Bluetooth light, Bluetooth software loaded on the system, and "Bluetooth RFCOMM" listed in device manager. I suspect this is why some reviewers have stated that their U210 included Bluetooth, but mine did not and I would not expect other U210's from Amazon to include it. Apparently an internal Bluetooth antenna can be purchased from Ebay and plugged into the U210's motherboard for about $20.

Appearance and build quality - I like the white color and overall the computer looks very nice. As others have noted, the keyboard does have a small bulge centered over the letter "K" key. Other notebooks/netbooks I have seen do appear to have a more solid feel, but I'm guessing that the "flimsier" feel of the U210 is what helps to keep it's weight down, and there is no indication to me that my U210 won't last several years.

Windows 7 upgrade from MSI - I followed the instructions and ordered the upgrade the day I received my U210, but have not received anything from MSI yet. UPDATE: I received the upgrade DVD from Microsoft exactly 1 month after submitting the request to MSI, doing all the steps as fast as possible. It took MSI about 3 weeks to send the coupon, and Microsoft was very fast, sending the DVD to my house within a week. Windows 7 is running smooth.

Overall the U210 is a great small notebook and I'm very happy with it.

This is an excellent Netbook. I also have a Dell mini 10 and this one is far more powerfull. Installed Win 7 which works great.
Things to note. This does not have 2 memory slots as advertised by Amazon - it only has one. I upgraded to 4 GB with no problems. There are reviews that HD video does not work; I hooked up a bluray player via usb and the video does stutter, but I have ordered a BroadCom BCM70010 BCM70012 HD Decoder Mini PCIe card for $25, which should correct this, if so, well worth it. Also note that this netbook does not come with bluetooth installed but also can be added for around $25. Agree with other reviews about the pros of this netbook, just wanted to add a few extra comments that may help you in your decision in reviewing this product.

Let me start off by saying that I did quite a bit of research before deciding on this little guy.

The main requirements I had when browsing were
(1.) It had to have a usable keyboard/touch-pad without requiring too much readjustment. I've use too many netbooks where the keyboard, while usable, drove me almost crazy with the amount of types I'd eventually amass just typically typing as I do on an average keyboard.

(2.)Decent battery life. I've owned several laptops, but half the point of these "netbooks" is battery life isn't it?

(3.)Screen Real Estate(Screen Size). It was a must that it struck a good balance between portability and the proper screen size for my multimedia/web browsing needs.

(4.) Not frustratingly slow. Being a bit spoiled by my 24" screen and desktop, I always have always had a few windows of this and that open and while I knew pretty much the whole point of these low priced netbooks was portability and battery life at the price of performance, a guy can dream right?

I am glad to say that the MSI U210-006US 12.1-Inch White Netbook - 5 Hour Battery Life fit all of those requirements and then some.

The keyboard was amazingly easy to use and surprisingly, required very little readjustment. I think MSI did an amazing job designing the overall body of the netbook, while giving the keyboard just enough room to make it feel pretty much like an average sized one. The touchpad works like it should and *it has an off/on toggle. It is also flat and flush with the bottom of the netbook and it has a tactile feel and is not at all like those terrible slippery glossy ones that started popping up in laptop/netbooks.
*The touchpad also does not have a side-scroll, but that can be remedied with a different driver from synaptic(Do a google search on synaptic drivers).

The screen is the perfect size. I sat it next to my 24" Benq monitor and the u210 screen really stood out with its brightness and color reproduction.

As for the battery, I'd say I get just around 3.5-4 hours of use on average with probably 70% web browsing and 30% watching videos([...]). After uninstalling some of more useless stuff and disabling some of system services that I know I'd never use, I consistently got around 4-4.5 hours on the system.

In terms of speed, it more than surpassed my expectations both for a netbook and the price range. I am able switch between a few google chrome windows and whatever small programs I'm running without any real bothersome slowdown.

Something of note also while I was doing my research about this netbook, I found out it apparently is an admirable performer when it comes to overclocking(I made a funny face too when I was first reading about it). The idea of overclocking has always made me a bit uneasy and even more so with portables that have limited heat dispersion. But luckily, the process was fairly straight-forward as I read it on the forums at [...] and I managed to get a boost in battery life as well as cpu performance.

*On a side note, I noticed when comparing the specs both on amazon and other vendors of this netbook that the gpu would be the AMD Radeon X1250 yet the product I received from amazon, to my delight, was the slightly more powerful AMD Radeon X1270. I also have bluetooth on this unit which again was not even listed. :)

Overall I give this netbook top marks. It fulfilled all of my requirements and does so at a very affordable price. When comparing this with the other netbooks I was looking at, the HP Mini 311, Acer Aspire 1410, and the ASUS Eee PC 1101HA the u210 ended up being the best of all my requirements without compromising too much in battery life. If you are in the market for a netbook and would prefer something a little bit zippier than the 90% of all the other netbooks equipped with an atom processor and don't mind sacrificing a bit of battery life, the u210 is a definite buy.

Edit:
I've been using the u210 almost daily for a solid month now and I am still very impressed. I just thought I'd inform anyone still on edge about this unit. Contrary to what some other reviewers have stated, I found the wifi chip in this to be very effective, much stronger and more reliable than the other three laptops(Dell, Toshiba, ABS) being used by my family members(intel chips and a broadcom). The u210 has consistently been able to obtain a relatively strong reliable signal where my other laptops failed.

This netbook also works pretty well with Vista, though they do offer you a "free" upgrade to Windows 7 provided you pay the $10 shipping... which then puts you through a few loops. You register and pay $10 shipping for your Win7 code and wait a good deal of time for that to arrive, and then register again at Microsoft's website only to have to fill in more info and then enter a code given by them back into their site and finally wait for your Windows upgrade CD to arrive. They even have a cute flow chart for it on their website.
*I paid my shipping fees about three weeks ago and have yet to get my upgrade form.

Something of note too was the RAM situation. This unit only has 1 upgrade slot and not 2 like Amazon has listed, and to be able to access that, you have to break the little flimsy sticker that voids your warranty...

TAMI R. HUNTER-NEAL ( Central Valley, CA )
I purchased this MSI Wind U123 Laptop for my daughter in Virginia. She needed something small, stylish, and convienent. So far, so good! She says that it's lightweight, she can carry in in her larger purses, and since it came with it's own protective case, she doesn't worry about anything spilling on it or soiling it in her purse. She told me that the speed was good, and that having the wi-fi connection is great, since many "Hotspots" are availiable in her area. She just LOVES the red color, and the battery time is adequate. The only concern she and I had was that the laptop just cut off for no reason a couple of times. We're thinking that she didn't let it charge long enough for the initial use. Other than that, I think I made a great purchase for my daughter, and I am considering purchasing one for myself soon.

I had a three hundred dollar budget so I spent a lot of time researching what would give me the most bang for my buck. I found a refurb 15" laptop that was about $400 but it came with Vista which was a dealbreaker for me. I finally decided on this netbook and I know I made a fabulous choice. It has XP, a 6 cell battery instead of the 2 hour batteries a lot of the netbooks have and an Atom N280 1.66gHz processor which is a small step up from the usual cheaper netbook processors. It's a lovely bright shade of red which matches its "personality" perfectly. I bought the 2GB RAM to replace the 1GB stick and an external CD/DVD burner. It come with a large amount of hard drive space but if you require more you can buy an external hard drive. I also bought a $5 USB 4 port extension so I can plug in more devices. I personally don't miss the bluetooth because whenever I get something with bluetooth I never use it anyway. Also, I believe you can purchase a TV tuner to use with this should you want it, however this feature is not a part of this particular model. This netbook is zippy...It's really just...perfect!

I've had an MSI Wind for several months and have had no trouble with it. Any queries I had to the MSI support people were promptly and satisfactorily answered. Overall it does a great job, is easy to type with despite its size, has excellent battery life. I travel quite a bit and having a small, light computer is a lifesaver. Several of my friends have bought Winds once they saw mine in operation.

Positives

a) Decent sized keyboard - takes couple of minutes to get used to.
b) Intel Atom and 1 GB more than sufficient to perform all the work needed to do
c) Visual clarity is excellent
d) HDD space is great.
e) USB - I'm moving from an earlier version of USB (that my laptop purchased in 2005 had), the USB 2.0 data copy is super fast.

Negatives

a) Gives a feeling that it could flip over due to a slightly heavier screen

Customer's Rating & Reviews (All-Reviews)

Kerrick Long ( Missouri, USA )
I took this netbook for my grandmother, and after seeing how amazing, I ordered one for me. Battery life is actually more than 14 hours of normal use of the Internet browsing, which is simply amazing! The keyboard does not feel too tight (except for the fact that [.] [,] E [/] buttons are a bit 'thinner than the rest, which can be a pain to a contractor), and markers are well placed .

It comes with Windows XP, but will soon be replacing it with Windows 7 at the mine, because I do not like to run ten years older operating systems. Out of the box, but it handles the streaming of music from Lala, Hulu video, and medium-heavy use internet very well.

In the fourth card reader is nice, and a 160GB hard drive, you've got to store photos when you empty the card to shoot more. The form of power cords to the left of the car, and the headphones on the right. There are three USB ports between the right and left. Overall, it feels very balanced, I like the configuration of the door. My grandmother has her for sale for $ 299 on Newegg, but over time I realized that I wanted one too, was back up to $ 399. I have come to the Amazon, and they found me in the middle, about $ 350.

Could use an upgrade of RAM if you plan on being a super heavy user, but works great for me to have music playback, 10-15 open tabs in Internet (I use Google Chrome), and running Aptana (which based on Java, so is a 'heavy') with the stock 1GB.

UPDATE: I've been asked about its screen, so I'll add this bit. It's got a matte screen, so it works really well in all sorts of situations - the brightness goes high enough for direct sunlight, even! I personally hate glossy, so I'm glad it's matte.

This netbook is perfect for what I wanted to travel. I stay at the forefront of e-mail, booking, etc. life long battery life, great screen, reasonable price and a decent sized keyboard all combine to make the packaging. I know that some do not like the size of the battery, however, is in a corner of the keyboard feel better and are more interested in working life longer look or impact on the bottom. I actually prefer it to my laptop, except Missing DVD / CD-ROM, but I knew that going in.

I buy this car to go into my Eurotrip in August, this book will have a net yield very good on drums, and the subsequent investment for this netbook is a 2G RAM, Windows 7 now runs and works well, but I think if installation of another 1G of RAM is very fast! I recommend this trip net book long!

Must be very clear on the set-up fold-out page, how to connect to the Internet. After a round table with her and spoke with tech support, I learned that it was simply held simultaneously on Fn and F11.

What can I say about this netbook? I LOVE IT! I bought this baby June 15, 2009 and love it. I support this thing once every 3 days or 4 .. I made a trip a few days ago and it worked like a charm ... I watched an entire movie during the flight and still had the extra battery to check my e-mail at the airport after the flight .. Most of my colleagues want to buy. This is the second that I bought the first one I bought was for my daughter for her birthday and I fell in love and I had to buy. pleased to announce that our two netbooks are working well and my son and my wife both want one ... Wireless internet works well, the webcam is cool. I've added extra RAM (2GB), and is easy to install, I purchased the external DVD / CD burner and is also easy to connect and enjoy .. . You will not regret if you buy this little baby ;-)

Received the order as soon as possible. Set-up was absolutely horrible. I could not pass the page of Windows XP that you click on your username. Tried to obtain technical support - is not available on weekends at all. Decided to register the product (the only way you can get technical support). Once you reach the registration page, click on the link to help identify where numbers are required - link no longer available! In addition, he received an instruction booklet with my order. This company should be ashamed to sell a product in this way.

Battery life is very long, comes with Windows XP, looks great, has a keyboard big enough, the fan is silent, and is small enough to carry comfortably. The wireless signal is still strong as well. Be sure to turn off the mouse pad when you type or probably accidentally clicking on it. Overall A +

That child is ideal for sailing, mini, compact it.what do not I like about this laptop is that the RAM is not upgradable. 1 GB is what you get. There is another model called WIND123H MSI, which is a better choice because it has a high resolution camera, and is expandable to 2GB.But sure that if you purchased the wind123h you must purchase a single module, 2 GB RAM I recommend worht that since Windows 7 will be held in the month of October.

I had this netbook for 3 days and its good performance. feel strong and lightweight. The complaint is that they are the mouse feels cheap and irregular (so who really presses the center button), pressing the button on one side, and may choose not to stay stuck. Also, im not sure what equipment I use, but seems to be a dust magnet. attracts dust and dirt adheres to the surface.

WOW !!!!! Can not say enough good things! just got my new MSI U100 netbook ... Today, I say that not a lot of research before buying this .... and I reluctantly sold my Compaq 1 years full-size laptop with Vista operating system this weekend to buy this guy .... Netbook that trade fresh off! 1 years my old laptop running Vista was slow huge, 2 GB RAM, Dual this and that, blah blah. State of the Art clunker! frozen at least twice a month, returned to Compaq 2 times before the warranty 6 months was also good ... Anyway, I love my new MSI netbook ...Compact, lightweight and powerful too! was out of the window for 30 seconds ... started with XP and I found my Internet connection BOOM! very nice ... buttons backlit LCD ... and instructions for the CD manual on how to overclock 24%! wow ... now its freakin fast! stylish black case ... and too many options .... court ... yea yeah yeah ... should have spent the extra money for a better system of mouse pads Fellas! but it is very useful, and you get used to drive .... I would recommend to any body, you £ 10 or Dell or HP Compaq laptop on a high bridge and seeing one of these netbook MSI! or do like I did and sell to some sucker on eBay for $ 350 in cash ..... Ah

I found this computer to be what was advertised and more. I have checked the information on the insurance front, I've added memory and was assured by the addition of memory MSI which does not invalidate the warranty. It 'very quick and easy to use. The only thing that I found inspiring is the touchpad while typing, but is a function key to disable. I finished adding the larger battery for more time for the user, but currently is more than adequate for my use. I recommend to others and to those who have already seen.

I chose the MSI Wind U100, after searching and testing for comparison. It looks great, and so far I have not had performance problems, except for one annoying thing that continues to occur. I thought I accidentally touch the touchpad often causes the cursor to move to another place, but found that sometimes it only does so on a voluntary basis under its own power. There may be seized and boom, suddenly moves wherever the cursor appears to last and to "enter" on his own and began writing in the middle of a sentence different. Also, the keyboard is easy to use, the screen is strong and the sound is good until you use earbuds or headphones. Battery life is not too long, so you need the power adapter most of the time. I also wish that he was an external CD / DVD. This is the next thing on my list to get. Overall, I adore her. Have installed the additional memory that I bought to go with him again.

As a boy has admitted electronics with three laptops (plus the new netbook), and two Macs and PCs for the office, I was curious about the new netbook MSI U100. As a photographer, my main purpose for purchasing the netbook was to have a computer capable of storing and editing photos when I travel, not to drag one of my laptop heavier. He was pleased with the Netbook of light and the ability to perform almost all the applications I needed, including Office 2003 (not crazy about the 2007 version) and Photoshop and PS Elements, Lightroom, Quicken, etc. with the hard 160 GB there is plenty of space for photos from my Nikon D700 and our point-and-shoot cameras.

A small problem is the lack of a right-click on the keyboard. You must hold down the Ctrl key and press the button under the platform of the fingers to get the right click menu. The best approach is simply to buy a wireless mouse - Now, however, need space for the mouse. It seems a simple solution for providing both the left and right, but for some reason, MSI has decided on a single button. Another problem is that changes the wireless signal, while at the same place in my house - and the data rate varies from 54 Mbps to less than 10. My other laptop seems to be less sensitive to this problem. I was transferring data from my office and found the rate had dropped to zero. I rebooted the computer and the high exchange rate has improved, but it is something I have not met before.

The keyboard is slightly lower (80%), a standard keyboard, typing can be a learning experience. I am from time to time on a button that appears as if I'm writing in code, when I look at the screen. The screen resolution is good, but I found that some applications simply do not have access (or even install) without a minimum of XGA resolution. I could not find a job around these questions. This is a restriction that applies to all netbooks. In fact, there is no difference between almost all the models that I studied. I recommend the netbook as a super computer for what it was designed for - to provide a laptop for e-mail and surfing the Internet. The Intel Atom is not fast enough for most applications. I recommend buying more than 1 GB of RAM.

Another challenge is the installation of additional RAM minor, but must remove a screw that is the subject of a warrant, which means that if the sticker is tampered with the warranty is void. Because MSI has decided to ask the entire back cover to be removed for access to a power of small memory size is not entirely clear, save the economy. Almost all the other netbooks have a small panel to add memory. This removal is probably not for beginners because it requires more finesse rather "it should be. I think we should provide the netbook standard with 2 GB, the cost of memory is so cheap anyway so that consumers are not affected by this poor design feature.

I made a trip to netbook in my hometown and it worked without problems. I managed to download the photos using a three USB ports and plug in an SD memory card directly into the card slot provided. The slot works with 2 GB standard SD card, but was not able to recognize more recent, 4 GB of memory, so I just used the USB cable. I have not bought a portable DVD burner, and could have received the most applications are installed using a 2GB USB drive and just copy the installation CD on it. MSI thoughtfully placed two adjacent USB ports when the port has sufficient power for the DVD. Overall, I recommend buying a netbook for travel, not to write the great American novel. It's great for airplanes, even if the £ 300 lies on the seat in front of you. The biggest advantage is its light weight, small size and ability to run your favorite PC applications, usually without problems.
