We bought our mini using the HP Promotion Verizon Wireless ($ 300) and gave our boy for Christmas. We have added the external hard drive and has a custom color. Our son loves. It is light, perfectly portable, access to Wi-Fi networks easily and is surprisingly easy to use even if it is so small. Now I have to turn off my laptop of all external drives and printers, and can just take this little boy. It's perfect for what it is ... better than an iPod touch or iPhone, but more manageable a laptop standard. It has an integrated camera, so we can video chat (Skype), when she is in my ex. And 'well able to handle all the demands of a high school student. I like to have another promotion, $ 300 certificate so you can get one for me!

This is a great piece of computer Hardware. The just begun, because ESC was around the corner, but now it's over the ESC and the HP Mini 311 netbook seems even the best around.

Pros
-Great Video Playback
-better average online video playback thanks to the NVIDIA ION
-4 hours of battery life in Windows 7

Cons
-FINGERPRINT MAGNET! GET THE ONE WITH THE WHITE LID!
-Performance could be better
-cannot boot with any receivers plugged into usb ports

In general, this is a great looking, high-performance machine that simply can not be beaten by other netbooks, as regards the overall quality goes. I installed Windows 7, and Ubuntu 9.10 and am triple booting.

Changes Ive Made
-The two big changes were the tripleboot setup
and converting ION LE to full out ION(GOOGLE IT!)

This is a great product for fans of Technology (to me) or medium-User. Soon BUY IT! NVIDIA ION 2 is coming for some time. This product is very thin, large battery, with a 12-inch (11:6) screen, and the ability to watch movies in HD, like a master! Best of all available Netbook! Do not hesistate how to go ahead and buy.

Changes I plan to make
-add 2GB of RAM

If you expect to receive a computer the size of a small bag, like Dell and Asus 7-9in you might think that this is too big for the netbook "class". However, long battery life and low cost make them acceptable. This is the smallest, least expensive laptop you will get an nVidia gfx capable of some games. I use it to play HD video (yay for HDMI and VGA) and as a second monitor for Guild Wars. It works very well with Ubuntu Linux. Also seems to have the popular support of the community OSx86 well.
My problem with this machine from HP are blocking the two (case study) mini PCI-Express only the HP brand. Why do they do? A little 'research and some stunt show some ways to get around it anyway. This model has Bluetooth, which is a shame in those days. There is a USB adapter for this small, but remains in power USB car during sleep, which may or may not benefit from its use. Port Card (not bootable) on the right, but no external port Express card. Ethernet is appreciated!

Mouse buttons on this project are poor and are difficult to press unless you do it near the edges closer. The keyboard is ok, nothing special, but usable. Nor do I think this machine unless you are planning to put more than 2 GB of RAM. The upgrade is cheap and easy, though. Upgrading hard drive and Wi-Fi cards WWAN is also easily accessible, but is not likely to be necessary. I think that strikes a Sweetspot for those looking netbook cheaper, lighter and more power than usual graphics.

I'm talking about some very small details when I do not give this product five stars. I bought it after checking the reviews and statistics on their competitors. My only complaints with the HP Mini 311 are:
1) There's no cover latch, so one must put a fingernail into the lid to open it,
2) The cursor seems to skip to another place in the email or word doc while I'm typing. Maybe that's because I'm heavy on the keys and have yet to look for a way to desensitize the keyboard for me, and
3) I really miss a volume control wheel on the exterior of the unit, so I can adjust audio volume without having to open it and find the volume control on the task bar or with some shortcut of keystrokes, which I've not yet found. Finally, the padded sleeve that comes extra from HP is the one to get. I tried to cut corners with another one at less price and ended up giving it away. So far, rolling back the clock, I'd buy the HP Mini 311 again. Beautiful high res image screen.
